Southern Nanthahala Wilderness (Google Map), GA - March 2005 - This was our first time in
the Southern Nanthahala, and it was actually really nice. I usually steer away from the
Appalachian Trail...especially during the thru-hiker season, because of all the people on the
trail. This was pretty early in the season, though, and we didn't really see many people. We
also hadn't hiked in this wilderness because I had read that it was just really steep. The trail
we hiked up was rough...and it was compounded by some weird knee problem I was having
that weekend. But we made it up to Standing Indian...with all the Boy Scouts, and then we
camp at the AT at Standing Indian. We were trying to meet my brother with a group he was
leading up here from UT for the weekend, but we didn't find them until the next day at the
shelter on down the trail. We then headed back down Kimsey Creek. It was a really nice hike,
and it got me thinking about the AT some more...
